This month we celebrate those big-moving, soft- hearted creatures we call gaited horses. It was very obvious from all of you who sent in photos, articles and stories about your barefoot and booted horses that they have a very strong following!
The popularity of gaited horses has surged in the past few years, with increasing numbers participating in recreational trail and other disciplines. For many people who ride them, it's all about comfort and having fun, and these smooth-gaited wonders provide the personality and tractability to carry a rider many miles, gliding in style.
For those of you who are interested, we will continue to post tips, suggestions and testimonials concerning gaited horses on our website just for you. Visit our home page and click on the "Do you have a gaited horse?" link.

Miles ahead on her Tennessee Walker
Terri Tinkham, who didn't start riding horses until her mid-50's, is in first place in our hoof boot contest. The horse she rides, Oliver Twist, is a gaited Tennessee Walker / Standardbred gelding who just turned ten this May. The team has been doing endurance since Oli was six. Terri light-heartedly describes Oli as a "scrappy little (14.2) 'pony' -- he is not a real pony but certainly acts like one."
Terri says, "I originally decided to go the barefoot route when our only halfway decent farrier moved out of the area. However, in hindsight, I think I would have come to it eventually because Oliver had begun to stumble.

There has been a question in the minds of some humans that taking the gaited horse barefoot takes too much time, ruins the gait, and the results are, at best, mediocre. "Boots are too hard to put on and it takes time away from the ride!" "One cannot ride the horse in the rocks barefoot!" Well, let's see if we can separate fact from fiction.
The real question here is “how can humans help with the health of their horses in a very positive manner?”
We have five barefoot Tennessee Walking Horses ranging from 9 to 27 years of age, plus our adult daughter owns two barefoot walkers – one does dressage and the other is entered in open jumping classes.

EasyCare's Dealer of the Month

Do you want to learn how to camp with your horse or fit a horse for Boas? If so, Hill View Farms is your expert. We chose Hill View Farms in Morgan, Minnesota as dealer of the month because of their well-rounded and fun approach to doing business. For Don and Cathy Tauer, their business is just an extension of their love of camping, trail riding, raising kids and spending time with their Peruvian Pasos. They don't sell anything they don't use themselves, and they are dedicated to offering personalized service and education.
Cathy provides regular clinics called "Camping with Cathy" that teach people how to prepare themselves and their horses for the perfect ride. In every clinic she integrates the products she manufactures and carries. She feels that Boa Horse Boots are a must for every shod or unshod trail horse. She says "I don't go anywhere, and I mean ANYWHERE without boots." (We always kid her about the ANYWHERE part of this.)

Last month we reported that a dear friend of ours, Bob Walz, passed away. Bob invented EZ Ride Stirrups. His daugher, Sue, is raising money for a trail memorial. Sue is hoping, through memorial funds, that she can buy a mile of trail on the Tevis in honor of her father. Each foot costs $1.00.

What is a Gaited Horse?
For those of you who might be wondering what a gaited horse is, most horses have three basic gaits--a four-beat walk, a two-beat diagonal trot and a three beat canter (lope if you ride western). A gaited horse is one that moves in ways other than these, and they come in various breeds. They can be a purebred such as a Tennessee Walker, a Paso Fino, a Kentucky Mountain Horse; OR they can be a crossbred horse such as a Walk-a-loosa (a cross between an Appaloosa and a Tennessee Walker.) They may rack, pace, singlefoot, do a running walk, or a do a variety of gaits, all of which are too complicated to cover in this short newsletter. Terry Tinkham (see lead story) says her horse occasionally makes up his own gaits, like the rack-a-lope. We're not sure that's a real gait, but Oliver thinks it is! |
