In this edition of the newsletter we honor two entrepreneurs very close to the EasyCare family who recently passed away within a month of each other. Dr. Neel Glass (inventor of the Easyboot) died on April 27th, 2008 at the age of 83, and Mr. Bob Walz (inventor of EZ Ride Stirrups), left us on May 17th at age 86. Both men were instrumental in developing cornerstone products for our company and will be greatly missed.

The reality of these two men's passing causes us to reflect on the common threads we all share, regardless of our backgrounds, and on the contributions that they made because of their love of horses, their sport and industry.

Dr. Glass and Mr. Walz were men ahead of their time--creative thinkers, problems solvers. As we say goodbye to them, we can only hope that our contributions to the equine world can be as positive as theirs were. Wherever they are today, we hope that the nuclear physicist and the gifted mechanic are blessed with good-footed horses, a soft ride, and like-minded horsemen as they glide into territories unknown. Thank you, Bob and Neel, for all you've done for EasyCare, and for the equine world.

Neel Glass, Ph.D, A Man Ahead of His Time

Neel Glass, Ph.D.Neel Glass, Ph.D. was a scientist, barefoot advocate and entrepreneur. He was an avid horseman whose many accomplishments include finishing the 1900-mile Pony Express Ride in 1979 (his horse wearing his invention), numerous endurance ride completions, and the founding of Les- Kare, Inc. (now EasyCare Inc).

Dr. Glass questioned the use of metal on hooves after studying the mechanics and physics of the hoof. When corrective shoeing failed to give relief to his daughter's navicular horse he became motivated to invent a shoeing alternative, and the Easyboot was born. Over 30 years later his invention has evolved into the leading alternative to traditional metal horse shoes. The Easyboot has become a key component in the fast-growing natural hoof care movement, and ultimately helps our beloved equine friends the world over live healthier, happier lives.

In addition to his impressive achievements in the equine field, Dr. Glass made noteworthy contributions to the scientific world. He was a nuclear physicist who spent his career at Los Alamos Laboratories in New Mexico. He was a lead designer for nuclear testing and originated techniques now in widespread use for nuclear calculations. He was twice honored with the Department of Energy Award of Excellence and was recognized as a Laboratory Fellow in 1986.

Bob Walz, Modifier Extraordinaire

Bob Walz, was known in the endurance world as Bob Walz at the Tevis Cup"loving the sport and instilling his love of it in others." He was riding up until two years ago, and had an impressive 8,690 endurance miles under his belt. He rode, crewed and sponsored riders many times at one of the most grueling annual endurance rides, the Tevis Cup and, in fact, he moved to California for it.

Bob Walz's invention of the EZ Ride stirrups had nothing to do with horse's feet and everything to do with his own. At 6' 5" tall, Bob was laden with a myriad of stirrup choices-all uncomfortably narrow for a man with big feet on long rides. Metallurgy was one of Bob's fortes so he confidently crafted an aluminum stirrup with a 4" by 5" padded rest. Over the years there have been slight modifications in materials but the EZ Ride Stirrups are still regularly recognized for their comfort and durability.

Bob was also the first person to adapt the Polar Heart Rate Monitor to equines, a significant training aid to this day for both long and short distance race horses. The EZ Ride Stirrup and heart rate monitor lines were purchased by Garrett Ford at EasyCare in the mid '90's, and EZ Ride Stirrups continue to be one of Easycare's most popular products. Bob loved working with aircraft metal, was a diesel mechanic, and was constantly making modifications to whatever he owned.

Pantyhose and Easyboots--Two Necessities for the Pony Express Race

Pony Express Ride 1976

Somewhere out West - 1976. On August 22, after Neel Glass had placed third in the 1,905-mile Pony Express Race, he must have been tired, sore, and elated. While his horse, Stanley, was the only one who started the race in Easyboots, by the time seven men and four women finished 39 grueling days, every horse was wearing them to prevent soreness and bruising over the varied terrain...
