My shoer told me “your horse has the worst hooves of any Arabian that I’ve ever shod”.
Not the most encouraging words for any endurance rider to hear about their future Tevis prospect. It takes a good 7 weeks for enough hoof to have grown on Steele Fire II+/ for reshoeing. After shoes are on for 4 weeks there is about a 30% chance of Steele loosing at least one shoe during a 50 mile endurance ride, especially on his front feet. My solution is to foam on easy boots over any 3-4 weeks or older shoes for a 50-65 miler. For rides greater than 65 miles (no mater how old the shoeing) all four feet get easy boots foamed on. With foamed on easy boots he has not lost one boot or the shoe under it during competitions.
Thankfully with the help of four easy boots, Steele has had a 100% completion rate for Tevis finishing three times including an 8th place finish in 2001 and earning a 50th Anniversary Tevis completion buckle for my husband in 2004.
