In March 2007 I rescued a little mare who was 16 years old, foundered, and neglected. She was barely halter broken and lived in a field of cows eating sileage and whole corn.
She'd never had a hoof trim her entire life and even after foundering, the owners had not secured any veterinary or hoof care for her. They waited until she'd had several "bad episodes" over a 2 year period before consulting a vet and a farrier.
The poor girl was in pain and her feet were horrible. We didn't know if she'd ever be sound again and radiographs showed considerable bone demineralization and rotation. The purpose in bringing her home was just to get her as comfortable as possible.
The first few days she was on bute and in Old Macs with pads inside. She was immediately more comfortable. Through regular hoof care, hoof boots, and a better diet, she is recovering beautifully! I can now ride her on trails and the hoof boots (I use both Old Macs and Epics) are a life saver.
She loves her boots and feels confident enough to stride out on the trails like an old pro. In fact, she will always find a way to get up to the front of the pack and lead the other horses. She has go-power! Using the boots with the pads has helped to rehabilitate the soft tissue of the foot and speed the healing process. The heels are no longer as contracted, the lateral cartilages are firm and healthy, and the digital cushions no longer feel like mush. We have more to do yet, but this is much better than I could have ever hoped for!
