"I am a natural horsemanship trainer, and I highly recommend all of your products. I was taught using very traditional horse-keeping methods, and had always accepted shoeing as a necessary evil. That is, until I met Sadie. A beautiful American Quarter Horse, she was 17 when I bought her. Her owners warned me that she absolutely had to be shod or she would go lame. Shortly after I purchased her she developed ringbone, and after x-rays the vet concluded she had a less than 20% chance of ever being sound again. He told me to put her on permanent stall rest and 2 grams of Bute a day. In the early stages she was in a tremendous amount of pain and it was almost impossible to reset her shoes.
My farrier told me she should be humanely put to sleep - she had lost almost 100 pounds on stall rest and I was devastated. But I wouldn't give up on this horse, so I started researching the causes and effects of Ringbone. I learned that it could be caused by shoeing and about the devastating effects shoes will have on a horse. I put Natural Balance shoes on Sadie for two months and then pulled her shoes completely. I had tried stall rest for about six months, but in addition to the drastic weight loss, she was stressed, miserable, and neurotic - constantly running circles in her stall. I saw that she was getting worse rather than better, so as a last resort I put her out to pasture
against my vet's recommendations and threw the Bute away.
I put her on an all-natural diet and although I had no idea if she would ever be sound again, I knew she would live a happy life as long as she was comfortable. Within six months she was back up to a healthy weight,
sound and bucking, and playing like I had never seen her play before! It has been two years since and she has not taken a lame step. She now happily 'runs' the barn and keeps the weanlings in line. We have an amazing bond and I am amazed that the solution to her lameness was so simple, and that it could have been so easily prevented!
All of my horses are barefoot now, and I won't go on a trail ride without my Old Macs! Thank you for your amazing products and all of your efforts in educating the equestrian community."
